Scott Camps climbed with a few of my mates when he climbed at Arapiles and I always found him to be sensible. However, this time [the person that removed the anchors] has got it wrong. A belay anchor cannot possibly change the nature of the route. The lead climber must climb the route before he gets anywhere near the anchor and thus it is no assistance to him. It only makes the belay safer for the second, and if we are going to be pedantic the pinnacle of trad climbing is leading not seconding. As for the anchors making Frog more popular. Over the last five years all cliffs around the country have become more popular. Fifteen years ago you could walk into Summer Day Valley in the Grampians and do any climb you chose. Now all of the instructional groups have the place tied up, literally. Two years ago we climbed in the Blue Mountains and found it busier than it was ten years ago. Along with this increase in popularity there are more climbers with questionable protection placement and belay set ups. Yes maybe they should learn to do it properly before they venture out by themselves, but the fact remains that some climbers do alot in the climbing gym, a weekend course and then think that they are ready to take on the world. Safety is the number one concern in climbing. A fact that was brought home in June when I broke my back and ankles in a ground fall. Six months later in pain constantly, very fortunate to be walking and along way to go with the rehab before I can climb again. Not to mention the extra strain on my wife when she had to take care of our two small kids without my help and the financial strain when my sick leave ran out. Why all this waffle? Because I don't think that climbers always consider the full consequences of a climbing accident. Frog is a cliff that is very loose up top. In my opinion there should be more anchors so that climbers don't need to go into the choss. My climbing partners and I all agreed that the increase in anchors at Frog over the last couple of years is a step in the right direction. After all we don't want two people dead because someone didn't like the look of tree anchors. MS
