I DO NOT AGREE WITH THIS!!!!!!!!!!!! The degradationn of frog buttess is because environmentally unaware and careless people have accessed the site. The boom in climbing in the last 5 years has created a surge in people who do not use minimal impact techniques and have limited experience going to the site. I do not agree with bolting and cannot understand peoples need to obtain a grade irrespective of how they do it. This is a sad day for me as I was not aware of what was happening. I do not go to Frog often because of the idiots yelling and swearing at the tops of their voices and I don't get the bush experience I got 10 years ago. These days I see people climb with mobile phones swinging from their harnesses. I am happy for people to climb at frog but what I have seen of late is rediculous. It is now a second KP. A very sad MM [and after a questioning email sent in response...] That is right. I do not agree with belay stations. Don't change the environment to suit yourselves. Climb in a manner that does not alter the environment. If people cannot do that then they should not go out there. The degradation is not going to stop by putting in belay stations. It will mean more people who do not know how to set up adequate belay stations will have access to the cliff because it is made simple. The track at the base of the cliff will degrage more and the steps will get worse. Next you will tell me that you need a concrete path along the base to stop soil erosion. Management of Frog Buttress is an issue of people management. The ringbarking occurs when people rush the rope through and cause friction. Easy to fix if you manage people and their recklessness and lack of consideration. The whole point of climbing in the outdoors is so that it is an outdoor experience and that it is you testing yourself against what is on offer. It is not about creating environments to suit ourselves. Belay stations detract from the experience. Frog buttress is beautiful and the trees deserve protection. By putting in belay stations you are only looking at a short term solution and not the big picture. It will only save the trees until the soil is washed away because of people trampling plants etc etc etc. MM
